Irrespective of whether you like Rann or not, one thing you most certainly would want to do after seeing the film, is to congratulate Ram Gopal Verma on his courageous attempt to make a totally different kind of a movie.
What this film does is that it exposes. Whereas media is often known to expose people, Rann exposes the media and those, who use it for their selfish gains. The film throws light on different aspects of news and news-making like, along with whatever is happening in the news room, what goes behind it, the all-interesting politician-industrialist-media nexus and the war between different channels to get better viewership, so that it can be ahead in ratings.
The film talks of how like any other field in the world, media also has both good and bad people, who over and under sensationalize the news and use the media for their selfish gains, without you even getting to know about it.
Rann is about Vijay Harshvardhan Malik [Amitabh Bachchan], a hardcore journalist with ethics, whose news channel 24×7 is fighting for survival. Vijay also has a son Jay [Sudeep), who looks at media in a very different way and feels that his father’s news channel is nothing but a business entity, which just like his father’s competitor [Mohnish Bahl] channel must give profits at the end of the day.
The story takes a turn when a corrupt politician Mohan Pandey [Paresh Rawal], who aspires to be the Prime Minister of the country, uses Vijay’s son-in-law Navin [Rajat Kapoor] to manipulate both Vijay and his channel.
The script of the film, as needed is tight and makes a lot of sense despite it being told in the simplest manner. The only drawback in the film’s script are certain scenes regarding investigative journalism, which tend to confuse the viewer to a extent. But, a well written climax compensates for this drawback and brings the film back on track.
Among the technical side of film making, Rann can boast of good cinematography by Amit Roy, well-penned dialogues and an excellent background music score.
Amitabh Bachchan has given an excellent performance in the film. Some of his scenes like say for example his speech before the climax, tend to show his caliber as an actor. Other star cast of the film including Sudeep, Riteish, Paresh Rawal, Rajat ,Kapoor, Gul Panag, Neetu Chandra, Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, Rajpal Yadav, Neena Kulkarni and Simone Singh have all justified their characters.
On a whole, Rann is a serious film with a very powerful message and will be liked by those who enjoy serious and meaningful cinema.
